The plant with bright red berries are called Nan-ten(南天）in Japanese.  Its Latin name is Nandina or Heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica). For new year celebration, Japanese decorates rooms or an entrance hall with a gorgeous flower arrangement, and Nandina is one of the items that you cannot miss. Nadina’s berries are considered to be an auspicious and believed to bring “good luck.” Why? it’s because the phonetic spellings of the Japanese words Nan – ten; The Chinese characters of this Nan-ten are “Southern-heavenly sky.” But, its phonetic spelling can be read as “escaping from a disaster.” Is not cool?

Japanese visit various sites to see beautiful autumn leaves. The other day I visited one of the temples in Kyoto, called Encho-ji, where is known for having an outstanding garden. This photo is from that temple. At the front, you see a big old gong.
